Discover the Natural Horse: Wild Horse Fire Brigade Launches the “Natural Horse Behavior” Certificate Program

Wild Horse Fire Brigade is proud to introduce our new ‘Natural Horse Behavior’ Certificate Program — an immersive wilderness study experience designed for horse professionals, trainers, natural resource managers, and passionate horse lovers.

For years, William E. Simpson II and Michelle Gough have guided immersive learning at Wild Horse Ranch using the “Goodall Method” — a patient, respectful approach to studying wild horses in their natural environment. William has lived continuously among a unique herd of 200 cultural-heritage horses for 12 years, while Michelle has done the same for 6 years. This remarkable herd was first documented by Sir Francis Drake’s exploration team in 1579 and is recognized in peer-reviewed academic work as one of the oldest documented wild horse herds in America, with genetic traits in some horses going back time immemorial.

Now, this extraordinary educational opportunity is opening to a wider audience.

The ‘Natural Horse Behavior’ Certificate Program offers participants a rare, undisturbed look into the intrinsic behaviors, family structures, and social dynamics of truly wild horses. Unlike horses shaped by 6,500 years of human training, domestication, and inbreeding, these horses display their natural baseline behaviors — free from fear-based responses triggered by constant human interference.

By observing wild horses in their authentic environment — where humans are accepted as non-threatening presences — participants gain profound insights that translate directly into better horsemanship, more harmonious horse-human relationships, and a deeper understanding of equine ethology, ecology, and their ecological benefits to the American landscape.

This program is ideal for:

  • Horse trainers and professionals seeking to strengthen natural horsemanship

  • Riders and horse owners wanting to better understand their horses

  • Professionals working with therapy horses

  • Natural resource managers looking for accurate, unbiased behavioral knowledge

Spots are extremely limited, and available for qualified applicants (terms and conditions apply).

The experience typically lasts one to two weeks at Wild Horse Ranch. William and Michelle provide personal instruction and introduction to some of the wild horses, which limits each week-long session to a maximum of 4-participants.

The program also provides a Certificate of accomplishment upon completion and photos of participants in the program for their use.

If you’re ready to move beyond traditional training methods and connect with the true nature of the horse, this program was created for you.
